The band formed in 1981 with John Bell and Michael Houser at the University of Georgia. They picked up a few band members along the way and signed with Landslide Records in 1987. Already a favorite on the local bar scene, Widespread Panic tour dates were expanded across the northeast during the late '80s. Their extensive tour schedule garnered the attention of Capricorn Records who signed the band in 1991.
